Architecture and Lights
August 2nd to 6th, 2007

This is your chance to experience CHICAGO with Photographic Discovery Tours. Be a part of the city that exudes the '20s & '30s cultural revolution of parties, frivolities, architecture and gangsters. Capture it all in an intensive weekend workshop within Chicago's MAGNIFICENT MILE. The lights, the action, the cultural experience!

Join us as we admire the soaring exteriors and opulent interiors of some of Chicago's most magnificent Art Deco skyscrapers. Chicago is not only the birthplace of the skyscraper it is also where most of the innovations in early skyscraper design and technology originated! You'll learn about the origins of the short-lived but lively Art Deco architectural style and be awestruck by the shooting opportunities provided due to the important role that Chicago played in the international Art Deco movement.

Learn about Chicago's colorful history and famous landmarks as you enjoy the panorama of Chicago's famous lakefront! View the entire downtown Chicago skyline from north to south. Navy Pier to the Hancock Building, out to the lighthouse, and south towards the Sears Tower, museum Campus, Shedd Aquarium and Field Museum of Natural History.

During the 4 day workshop/tour:

  • Our instructors will guide and teach you how to improve your vision, develop your skills and capture your impressions of this journey through time.
  • You will have the opportunity to create a portfolio of photographic images that will bear witness to the events and architectural achievements that exist in Chicago.
  • You will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of this magical city through your discoveries, your enhanced awareness and the images you capture.

The objective of Photographic Discovery Tours is in its name: We strive to enhance your passion for photography as we discover, together, this culturally unique location.

  • Our photographers are fully qualified professionals who have many years of photographic and teaching experience.
  • They have an in depth knowledge of CHICAGO
  • Suggestions and coaching will be given on how to capture your best images as you develop an awareness for your surroundings.
  • SLR digital capture / digital observation on PDTours Laptop Computer
  • When possible we offer you same day processing (E6) of colour film
  • Each day has scheduled activities and ample time to explore the city or simply relax.
  • Groups are small to ensure quality feedback and coaching.
  • Individual instruction will strengthen your aesthetic sensibility and technical know-how
  • Regular sessions are scheduled to review and discuss your images and progress

Tour Registration and Policy

  • Tour fee is TBD ASAP (pending) CAD plus GST.
    Airfare is additional.
  • Limited to 10 photographers per tour.
    Apply early as tours sell out fast.
  • A deposit of $600 CAD must accompany your registration.
    (includes non refundable registration fee of $75)
  • Payment in full is due 60 days prior to the start of a tour.
    (CHI - 07: May 31st, 2007)

Tour includes:

  • 4 nights accommodation - single occupancy with private bath.
  • Early morning snack.
  • Transfers to and from airport. Local land transportation to excursion
    locations. Entrance to museums, galleries and historic sites.
  • An introduction session prior to the tour (to be held in Ottawa).
  • Observation, evaluation sessions, lectures and critiques.
  • Two professional photographers will accompany the tour.
  • Guide and translation services.
  • Delivery and pickup of film processing.
  • One-year paid subscription to Canada's premier photographic magazine - Photolife www.photolife.com

Not included:

  • Airfare to and from Chicago.
  • Baggage, equipment, medical and cancellation insurance.
  • Meals, drinks, tips and gratuities.
  • Personal expenses.
  • Photographic equipment, film or processing.
  • Significant Other Supplement $TBD CDN

Participants

  • Participants should have a working knowledge of their equipment and good basic knowledge of photographic techniques.
  • We suggest that you take a basic photography course before you join our tour.
  • Most activities will require a moderate level of physical fitness. It will be necessary to walk reasonable distances each day, climb stairs, moderate hills.
  • In order to capture the optimum light you may be expected to rise a couple of hours before sunrise on certain days.
  • Participants are responsible for their own medical and dietary needs whilst on this tour.
  • Excellent doctors are available should the need arise.
