On most Airlines you are able to carry-on
up to 2 portable bags. There are restrictions on this for
various sizes and weights. This is where all your camera
gear should be including film, laptops and storage devices.
Myself, I use all LowePro bags. They are designed and used
by many experienced photographers and are very affordable.
LowePro indicates which ones are Airline approved for carry-on.
Since I teach photographic Workshops /Tours I carry a fair
bit of equipment so I have developed a system that has worked
for me over the past few years and will share this with
you. The two bags that I carry on the plane are the Road
Runner AW mini and the EX 1200. In the checked piece of
baggage that goes under the plane, I pack my day bag, the
Sling Shot 200AW (which in my opinion is one of the best
designed camera bags to come out in years). I remove all
the portable liners and fill it with my toiletries packed
in zip lock bags.
All my Camera equipment fits into the
Road Runner AW mini. It is amazing. This includes 3 cameras;
a Canon EOS 10D Digital SLR body, a Canon EOS 5D Digital
SLR body (full chip) and a Hasselblad Xpan and all Film
Lenses including; an EF14mm f/2.8l USM, TS-E 24mm f/3.5,
EF35mm f1.4LU, EF 50mm f/1.4, EF 100mm f/2.8 macro, and
a EF 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6L IS USM zoom Canon lense and 2
Fuji lenses, a 45mm f/4 and a 90mm f/4 for the Xpan and
finally a Canon EXT EF 1.4 extender is included. The one
filter I use is the B+W Circular Polarizer Filter with 2
stepping rings to fit all my lenses. I also carry my Gitzo
G1378M ball Head along with all my spare rechargeable batteries,
and nicads. Because I still use the 10D with the Digital
camera chip being set at a 1.6, my Canon Lenses turn into
6 additional focal lengths - it's like having 12 lenses
but only carrying 6. This is my first carry-on. |

My second carry on is the EX 200. I am
able to carry all of my rechargeable plug-ins for my batteries
along with a laptop if need be. I choose to carry an Epson
P2000 40 gig hard drive storage device instead to allow for
portability during my day shoots. I always travel with a power
bar for convenience of doing multiple charges and I carry
a small portable 9x12 P-Frame light table for reviewing transparencies
during the workshops. Also included are 2 Canon Speedlight
540EZ portable flashes with the Canon St-E2 Speedlight Transmitter.
All my travel books, maps and additional info travel with
me in this bag. I use lead covered bags to carry my film which
has the cardboard box and plastic containers removed and is
packed in clear see thru Zip lock bags for visual inspection
at security. The easier you make it for those guys, with a
big smile on and lots of thank yous, the smoother this part
of the trip goes. Also bring your camera manuals for reference,
you will be surprised at how many of those controls are seldom
used but are easy to find with that manual. |

As I mentioned, I use the new Slingshot
200AW by Lowepro as my day bag when out shooting during
the day or nite. This new bag is fantastic. I like it for
a number of reasons the best being that it forces you to
take a minimum amount of equipment when you are actually
out making photographs.
The Ergonomic sling strap is great for both females and
males because the single strap fits both body types. Three
well designed compartments ensure plenty of accessible room
for cleaning supplies, back up body and light meter. The
main compartments allow enough room for a full body with
grip and room for 2-3 lenses. Very easy access to your cameras
without removing the bag, as seen in the photo, is the best
idea in years. Also getting in and out of Taxis without
ever taking this bag off adds greater security. |
